The Joglo by the Sea is a 100-year-old antique teak Javanese house on the black-sand beach at Temukus, ten minutes' drive from Lovina on Bali's north coast. It sits in its own oceanfront garden with 15 metres of beach frontage, and the sea in front is calm enough for easy swims.
The house
Local craftsmen restored the joglo using traditional techniques and local materials. Inside is one air-conditioned bedroom with a queen bed and good linen, and a large bathroom with a stone bathtub, a shower and a window onto the sea. There is fast WiFi (100 Mbps from Biznet), a large-screen TV with HBO Max and Disney+, and an outdoor kitchen with a stove, a small fridge, a microwave and coffee-making things. The terrace looks straight out to the waves. An infrared sauna is shared with our neighbouring villas, and a therapist can come to the house for a massage.
The area
There is no pool at the Joglo, but the sea is at your door, and a beach club with a pool and restaurant is a short walk along the sand. Three restaurants are within a ten-minute walk, several restaurants deliver, and we have an in-villa dining menu. Sunrise dolphin boats leave from the beach in front of the house at 6 am (200,000 IDR per person, minimum two), and Menjangan Island, waterfalls and temples are easy day trips. We can arrange airport transfers and drivers.
Good to know
The Joglo uses natural spring water, so the water smells different from chlorinated town water. It is a wooden house by the sea in the tropics, so expect the odd gecko or insect and a few leaves after rain. We send a guide with our favourite places before you arrive. Checkout is 11 am.
