Travel Purpose: leisure

Positive: The homestay itself is nice- you essentially get the top floor of the house: 2 bedrooms (if you book x2), living room with sofa, dining table, wrap around balcony. The bathroom is very basic: a squat toilet and shower (no sink), so not appropriate if you are a bit of a princess traveller. The food was great, lovely breakfast and dinner (rice, vegetables, fish, egg). Awesome location being able to stay in Komodo village.

Negative: Although the homestay itself was great, you need to consider how you will arrive and spend your days here. You could get the local ferry boat to the island which can be quite long/crowded and then spend time wandering round the village, getting a guided tour with komodo dragons. If you book this homestay, you will be offered a 2 day private boat tour- to be picked up from the mainland and showed the sights, and dropped back at the mainland on the last day. There were positives and negatives to this: it's quite pricey but it is private. It's a very basic wooden boat with a loud engine (bring earplugs, and you are sat on cushions on the floor of the boat). It is not a 'polished' tour, it is more authentic/local which can of course be a good thing. The attitude of our guide was a little off-putting, at times we felt uncomfortable which is the only time we felt like this in Indonesia. Overall the homestay was great. Saw some amazing things on the tour. I wouldn't rush to recommend specifically to friends however.
